FANUC SP9014 Alarm 14: Spindle Software Mismatch and Troubleshooting

FANUC SP9014 indicates that the spindle amplifier identification data is not compatible with the series or edition of the spindle control software. The spindle amplifier displays alarm 14.

In the FANUC Series 0i-D/0i Mate-D maintenance manual, this condition is described as the use of a spindle amplifier that is not registered in the spindle software program. The stated remedy is to upgrade the spindle software. In the FANUC Servo Amplifier αi Series maintenance manual, alarm 14 is described as inconsistent amplifier ID data, and the stated action is to replace the abnormal spindle amplifier.

These instructions apply to different FANUC products and manual scopes. The correct repair therefore depends on the exact CNC, spindle amplifier model, software series, software edition, and service history.

Do not assume that every SP9014 alarm requires only a software update or only an amplifier replacement. First identify which manual applies to the installed equipment.

1. Confirm the Alarm and Record the System Configuration

Before changing software or hardware, record:

  • The complete CNC alarm number: SP9014
  • The spindle amplifier display: 14
  • The exact FANUC CNC series and model
  • The complete spindle amplifier model and suffix
  • The spindle software series and edition
  • Whether the alarm appeared after amplifier replacement, CNC data recovery, a software change, or other maintenance

On the Series 0i-D/0i Mate-D system described in B-64305EN/03, the spindle amplifier STATUS display shows the last two digits of the spindle software series for approximately one second after control power is turned on. It then shows the software version for approximately one second. Record this information only according to the display procedure in the applicable FANUC manual.

The event that immediately preceded the alarm is important. If SP9014 first appeared after a spindle amplifier was replaced, compatibility should be checked before treating the replacement amplifier as a direct equivalent. If it appeared after CNC software or spindle data work, confirm that the correct spindle software was installed or restored.

2. Verify Spindle Amplifier and Software Compatibility

Compare the complete spindle amplifier identification with the CNC and spindle software specification. A replacement amplifier may be mechanically installable and electrically connected but still not be registered in the installed spindle software.

Confirm the following using the applicable FANUC documentation:

  • The complete spindle amplifier model, including all suffixes
  • The amplifier series and hardware specification
  • The spindle software series and edition
  • Whether that amplifier identification is supported by the installed software

Do not select a replacement only by the base model number, connector layout, power rating, or physical appearance. The amplifier ID and software support must also match.

If the installed amplifier is not supported by the spindle software, follow the software remedy specified for the exact CNC series or install the correct compatible spindle amplifier.

3. Upgrade or Restore the Correct Spindle Software When Required

For FANUC Series 0i-D/0i Mate-D systems covered by B-64305EN/03, the official remedy for SP9014 is to upgrade the spindle software program because the installed amplifier is not registered in that software.

If maintenance records confirm that spindle software or related spindle data was accidentally erased, damaged, or incorrectly restored, have qualified personnel recover or update it using the correct FANUC software package for the CNC and amplifier combination.

SP9014 alone does not prove that spindle data was accidentally deleted. It confirms a software-support or amplifier-ID inconsistency. Before performing a software recovery, verify the CNC model, amplifier model, currently installed software series and edition, and the correct target software.

Do not install an arbitrary spindle software version. Software loading and recovery should be carried out only by qualified personnel with the applicable FANUC procedure and the correct software for the machine configuration.

4. Test or Replace the Spindle Amplifier When the Software Is Correct

For αi Series spindle amplifiers covered by FANUC Maintenance Manual B-65285EN/04, alarm code 14 means that amplifier ID data inconsistent with the software series and edition was detected. The troubleshooting action in that manual is to replace the spindle amplifier.

If the correct spindle software is installed and the amplifier should be supported, professionally test the spindle amplifier. Replace it when the applicable manual identifies it as abnormal or when its ID data is confirmed to be faulty.

Use an exact compatible replacement. Before installation, verify the complete part number, suffix, hardware specification, and software compatibility. After installation, power up the system according to the applicable FANUC procedure and confirm that alarm 14 no longer appears.

Difference Between Alarm 14 and Alarm 17

FANUC alarm codes 14 and 17 both involve amplifier ID data, but they are not the same condition:

Recommended Troubleshooting Order

  1. Confirm SP9014 on the CNC and alarm 14 on the spindle amplifier.
  2. Record the exact CNC model, spindle amplifier model and suffix, and spindle software series and edition.
  3. Determine whether the alarm began after amplifier replacement, software work, or spindle-data recovery.
  4. Check whether the installed amplifier is registered in and supported by the current spindle software.
  5. For a Series 0i-D/0i Mate-D configuration covered by B-64305EN/03, upgrade or correctly restore the spindle software when required.
  6. If the applicable amplifier manual identifies the spindle amplifier as abnormal, test and replace it with an exact compatible unit.
  7. Retest the machine using the commissioning procedure for the specific FANUC CNC and spindle system.

SP9014 is a compatibility and identification alarm. FANUC documentation does not direct technicians to begin with motor insulation, power cables, spindle sensors, mechanical load, cooling, or PMC switching sequence. Avoid unrelated adjustments unless another alarm or test result provides evidence for them.
