FANUC SP9016 means that the Dual Check Safety function detected an error during a RAM test inside the spindle amplifier CPU. The CNC displays SP9016, while the spindle amplifier displays alarm 16.
FANUC Maintenance Manual B-65285EN/04 identifies the spindle amplifier as abnormal and instructs technicians to replace the spindle amplifier. The FANUC Series 30i-A Dual Check Safety Operator's Manual B-64004EN/02 also describes SP9016 as a spindle RAM test error and specifies replacement of the spindle amplifier module.

What Does FANUC SP9016 Mean?
FANUC alarm lists may describe SP9016 briefly as a RAM error or as an abnormality in RAM used for spindle amplifier data. The more specific description in the αi Series maintenance manual is that the Dual Check Safety function found an error in a CPU internal RAM test.
The Series 30i-A Dual Check Safety manual explains the test process in more detail. During normal operation, RAM areas are checked in sequence at fixed intervals. Test patterns are written to RAM and then read back. If the data cannot be read back correctly, the system generates the alarm assigned to the affected processor. For the spindle system, that alarm is SP9016.
This is a self-diagnostic hardware alarm. It is not described by FANUC as a spindle motor, power cable, position sensor, cooling, mechanical-load, or spindle-parameter fault.
SP9016 Is Associated With Dual Check Safety
On the FANUC systems covered by the cited manuals, alarm 16 is detected by the Dual Check Safety RAM test. Dual Check Safety uses independent monitoring and periodic self-tests for safety-related processing. The RAM test is one of those internal diagnostic functions.
The presence of SP9016 does not mean that the operator entered an incorrect safety-speed value or that a guard-door request was made incorrectly. Those conditions have their own DCS-related alarms. SP9016 specifically identifies an abnormal result in the spindle RAM test.
Do not disable a safety function, bypass the alarm, or change safety parameters to try to clear SP9016. FANUC's alarm 16 procedure does not specify a parameter adjustment. The stated action is hardware replacement.
1. Confirm SP9016 and Amplifier Alarm 16
Before removing any hardware, confirm both alarm displays:
- The CNC alarm screen shows SP9016 or SSPA:16 RAM ERROR.
- The spindle amplifier status display shows 16.
- The alarm is associated with the spindle amplifier, not a CNC, PMC, or servo RAM alarm with a different number.
Record the alarm screen before switching off the machine. Also record:
- The complete CNC series and model
- The exact spindle amplifier or SPM model, including every suffix
- The spindle software series and edition when available
- Whether the machine uses Dual Check Safety
- When the alarm appeared and whether any amplifier work was performed beforehand
These details do not change the meaning of alarm 16, but they are necessary for selecting the correct replacement and applying the correct FANUC manual.
2. Do Not Add Unrelated Troubleshooting Steps
FANUC's official alarm 16 procedure does not instruct technicians to adjust spindle parameters, inspect motor insulation, replace the feedback cable, change the PMC ladder, or test the magnetic contactors. Those checks belong to other spindle alarms.
SP9016 also should not be diagnosed as lost CNC programs or machine SRAM data. The detected fault is in the spindle amplifier RAM test. Restoring a CNC backup or reloading machine parameters is therefore not the official remedy for alarm 16.
Power cycling may be used only as part of the machine builder's normal confirmation procedure. A reset is not the repair specified by FANUC. If alarm 16 is confirmed, proceed according to the applicable replacement procedure.
3. Replace the Abnormal Spindle Amplifier
For alarm 16, FANUC B-65285EN/04 states that the spindle amplifier is abnormal and must be replaced. B-64004EN/02 similarly instructs the technician to replace the SPM unit or spindle amplifier module.
Before installing a replacement, verify:
- The full FANUC part number and all suffixes
- The amplifier series and hardware specification
- Compatibility with the CNC, spindle motor, spindle software, and Dual Check Safety configuration
- Connector arrangement and machine-specific installation requirements
Do not choose a replacement only by physical appearance, output rating, or the base part number. A spindle amplifier that is not compatible with the installed software can generate a different alarm, including SP9014.
Replacement must be performed with machine power isolated and by qualified personnel. Observe the discharge time and electrical-safety instructions in the applicable FANUC maintenance manual. Preserve the original machine configuration and follow the machine builder's commissioning procedure.
If a replacement unit is required, browse FANUC servo, spindle, and power drives or send the complete amplifier model to REACO CNC for a compatibility check.
4. Retest the Spindle and Safety Functions
After the correct replacement amplifier is installed, power up the machine according to the applicable procedure and confirm:
- SP9016 and amplifier alarm 16 no longer appear
- The amplifier starts without another hardware or compatibility alarm
- The spindle operates correctly under the machine builder's test procedure
- Required Dual Check Safety checks are completed according to the applicable FANUC and machine documentation
If the replacement amplifier reports another alarm, diagnose the number actually displayed. Do not continue treating every subsequent alarm as SP9016.
Difference Between SP9013 and SP9016
SP9013 and SP9016 both concern RAM inside the spindle amplifier, but FANUC describes their detection conditions differently:

Difference Between Alarm 16, Alarm 74, and Alarm 75
Several Dual Check Safety alarms involve internal self-tests, but they identify different checks:

- Confirm SP9016 on the CNC and alarm 16 on the spindle amplifier.
- Record the CNC model, complete spindle amplifier model and suffix, spindle software information, and Dual Check Safety configuration.
- Confirm that the alarm is a spindle amplifier RAM test error rather than a different CNC, servo, or PMC memory alarm.
- Do not change spindle parameters, ladder logic, safety settings, motor wiring, or feedback cables without evidence from another alarm.
- Select an exact compatible spindle amplifier or SPM replacement.
- Isolate machine power and replace the amplifier according to the applicable FANUC and machine builder procedures.
- Retest the spindle and the required Dual Check Safety functions.
- If another alarm appears, diagnose that alarm separately.
