FANUC SP9017 means that an error was detected in the spindle amplifier ID data. The CNC displays SP9017, while the spindle amplifier displays alarm 17.
FANUC maintenance documentation identifies two main diagnostic directions: the spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board may be loose or incorrectly mounted, or the spindle amplifier may be abnormal. Check that the control board is mounted correctly. If its installation is correct and alarm 17 remains, replace the spindle amplifier according to the applicable FANUC procedure.

What Does FANUC SP9017 Mean?
The spindle amplifier contains identification data used by the control system to recognize the amplifier hardware. Alarm 17 is issued when an error is detected in that amplifier ID data.
Some FANUC alarm tables and service references call SP9017 an ID parity error. However, the αi Series maintenance manual uses the broader wording “an error was detected in amplifier ID data.” For model-independent troubleshooting, Amplifier ID Data Error is therefore the more precise main description. Always use the terminology and procedure in the manual for the exact installed amplifier series.
SP9017 is an internal amplifier identification or control-board connection fault. FANUC does not identify spindle motor insulation, motor power cables, position sensors, cooling, mechanical load, spindle parameters, or PMC sequence as the primary causes of alarm 17.
Main Causes of FANUC Alarm 17
FANUC documentation identifies the following main causes:
- The spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board is loose or not fully mounted.
- A connector between the control printed-circuit board and the amplifier power section has poor contact because the board is not seated correctly.
- The spindle amplifier control circuitry or ID data is abnormal.
- The spindle amplifier itself is faulty and requires replacement.
If the alarm first appeared immediately after a control board, faceplate, or spindle amplifier was removed or replaced, check the completed maintenance work before assuming that another machine component has failed. Record the full part numbers and confirm that the installed parts belong to the exact amplifier specification.
1. Confirm SP9017 and Amplifier Alarm 17
Before removing any hardware, confirm both displays:
- The CNC alarm screen shows SP9017 or SERIAL SPINDLE ALARM.
- The spindle amplifier status display shows 17.
- The alarm belongs to the spindle amplifier rather than a servo amplifier, CNC, or PMC alarm with a similar description.
Record:
- The complete CNC series and model
- The exact spindle amplifier model, including every suffix
- The control printed-circuit board number when it can be identified safely
- The spindle software series and edition when available
- Whether the alarm appeared at power-up or after recent amplifier maintenance
- Whether the control board or complete amplifier was recently removed, repaired, or replaced
This information is required to select the correct manual and replacement. Do not diagnose the alarm from the base model number or physical appearance alone.
2. Isolate Power Before Inspecting the Amplifier
The control board must not be removed, inserted, or pressed into position while the amplifier is energized.
Before opening the power magnetics cabinet or touching the spindle amplifier:
- Place the machine in the required safe state.
- Switch off and isolate the machine power.
- Wait for the DC link to discharge for the period specified in the applicable FANUC manual.
- Confirm that the charge indicator is off and verify the required electrical condition before touching internal components.
- Follow the machine builder's lockout and electrical-safety procedure.
Spindle amplifiers contain hazardous voltages even after incoming power is switched off. Inspection and replacement should be performed only by qualified personnel.
3. Check the Spindle Amplifier Control Board Installation
FANUC B-65285EN/04 states that alarm 17 can occur when the spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board becomes loose. Check that the board is mounted correctly and fully seated.
Inspect the applicable control board or front faceplate assembly for:
- A board that is not inserted completely
- Uneven seating or a faceplate that is not flush
- Loose retaining screws, locks, or mounting points
- Misaligned board-to-power-section connectors
- Foreign material, contamination, corrosion, or visible connector damage
- Damage caused during previous removal, repair, or transportation
Do not force the board into place. If it is not seated correctly, remove and reinstall it using the procedure for the exact amplifier model. Inspect connector alignment before reinsertion and push the board fully into its specified position.
The purpose of this step is to restore reliable contact between the control printed-circuit board and the amplifier power section. It is not a request to modify, short, or bypass the ID circuit.
4. Power Up and Check Whether Alarm 17 Returns
After the control board has been installed correctly and all covers and connections have been restored, power up the system according to the applicable machine procedure.
Confirm:
- The spindle amplifier no longer displays 17.
- SP9017 no longer appears on the CNC.
- No new amplifier alarm is displayed.
- The spindle completes the machine builder's functional test normally.
If the alarm clears after correct board installation, the likely cause was poor control-board seating or connector contact. Repeatedly pressing or cycling the board is not a permanent repair if the mounting mechanism, connector, or board is damaged.
5. Replace the Spindle Amplifier if SP9017 Remains
If the control printed-circuit board is mounted correctly but alarm 17 remains, FANUC B-65285EN/04 identifies the spindle amplifier as abnormal and instructs technicians to replace it. The Series 0i-D/0i Mate-D alarm list similarly gives replace the spindle amplifier as the remedy for SP9017.
Before installing a replacement, verify:
- The complete FANUC spindle amplifier part number and every suffix
- The amplifier series and hardware specification
- Compatibility with the CNC, spindle motor, spindle software, and machine configuration
- The control-board and connector specifications required by the original unit
Do not select a replacement only by output capacity, housing size, connector arrangement, or a shortened part number. An incompatible amplifier or control board can produce a different identification or software compatibility alarm.
Where the applicable FANUC documentation and professional repair procedure permit separate control-board service, a confirmed faulty control printed-circuit board may be tested or replaced by a qualified repair facility. However, this is not a universal field remedy for every amplifier series. The αi manual's stated action after correct board mounting is to replace the spindle amplifier.

Difference Between SP9014 and SP9017
SP9014 and SP9017 both involve amplifier identification, but they do not describe the same fault:

If alarm 14 appears after installing a replacement amplifier, check software support and compatibility. If alarm 17 appears, begin with the physical installation of the spindle amplifier control board and then follow the hardware replacement procedure. Always diagnose the number actually shown on the amplifier.
Difference Between SP9017 and SP9018
Alarm 17 is also different from the next spindle alarm:

Recommended Troubleshooting Order
- Confirm SP9017 on the CNC and alarm 17 on the spindle amplifier.
- Record the complete CNC, spindle amplifier, control-board, and software identification.
- Determine whether the alarm appeared after amplifier or control-board maintenance.
- Isolate power and wait for the DC link to discharge according to the applicable manual.
- Check that the spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board is correctly mounted and fully seated.
- Inspect the applicable internal connectors and mounting parts for misalignment, contamination, or damage.
- Reinstall the board correctly when required and retest the amplifier.
- If alarm 17 remains with the board correctly mounted, replace the spindle amplifier with an exact compatible unit.
- If a different alarm appears, diagnose the new alarm separately.
SP9017 is not a general spindle-performance alarm. Do not begin by changing parameters, editing the PMC ladder, replacing the motor, or testing unrelated switching circuits unless another alarm or measurement provides evidence for those checks.
