FANUC SP9132 means that communication between the serial spindle sensor and the spindle amplifier has been interrupted. The CNC displays SP9132, while the spindle amplifier displays d2 or D2, depending on the display convention used by the machine.
FANUC Maintenance Manual B-65285EN/04 describes alarm d2 as a disconnected communication path between the serial sensor and spindle amplifier. The possible causes depend on whether the alarm occurs during initial commissioning or appears on a machine that previously operated normally.
| Alarm location | Display | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| CNC | SP9132 / Serial Spindle Alarm | Serial sensor communication has been interrupted |
| Spindle amplifier | d2 or D2 | Serial data is not being received from the spindle sensor |
| Main circuit involved | Sensor feedback path | Sensor settings, compatibility, feedback cable, sensor, or spindle amplifier |
This alarm concerns the serial feedback system. It should not initially be diagnosed as a spindle motor power-circuit, overload, cooling, or mechanical-load problem.
What Does FANUC SP9132 Mean?
The serial spindle sensor supplies position and speed feedback data to the spindle amplifier. When the amplifier cannot establish or maintain this serial communication, the CNC reports SP9132 and the amplifier indicates d2.
FANUC documentation uses two closely related descriptions:
- Serial data error
- Communication between the serial sensor and spindle amplifier is disconnected or not performed
The word “data” can make this alarm sound like a CNC communication fault. However, SP9132 concerns the feedback communication path between the spindle sensor and spindle amplifier. It is different from alarms C0, C1, and C2, which concern communication data between the CNC and spindle amplifier.
Startup Alarm Versus Alarm on a Previously Working Machine
The time at which SP9132 appears is important.
According to FANUC B-65285EN/04, when d2 occurs during startup or after equipment has been installed or replaced, the possible causes include:
- Incorrect serial sensor parameter settings
- A spindle amplifier that does not support the installed sensor or detector configuration
- A disconnected, incorrectly connected, or broken feedback cable
- A defective spindle amplifier or spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board
When the machine previously operated normally and SP9132 appears without a configuration change, FANUC narrows the likely causes to the feedback cable/connection and the spindle amplifier. In field troubleshooting, the serial sensor may also be checked or substituted after the cable has been eliminated, especially when the applicable CNC alarm list specifies sensor replacement.
This distinction prevents unnecessary parameter changes on a machine whose configuration was already proven to work.
1. Confirm SP9132 and Amplifier Alarm d2
Before changing parameters or replacing hardware, confirm both displays:
- The CNC alarm screen shows SP9132 or a serial spindle alarm associated with number 9132.
- The spindle amplifier status display shows d2 or D2.
- The alarm is associated with the spindle serial sensor, not CNC-to-amplifier communication alarm C0, C1, or C2.
Record the CNC alarm screen and amplifier display before switching off the machine. Also record:
- Complete CNC series and model
- Exact spindle amplifier model and all suffixes
- Spindle motor model
- Serial spindle sensor model or detector specification
- Connector designation used on the machine wiring diagram
- Whether the alarm occurs immediately at power-up, during spindle excitation, or while the spindle is rotating
- Whether parameters, the sensor, cable, motor, or amplifier were recently replaced
These details determine which manual edition and connection diagram apply.
2. Identify What Changed Before the Alarm
If SP9132 first appeared after maintenance, identify the last change before replacing parts. Common triggers include:
- Spindle parameters were initialized, restored, or transferred from another machine
- A replacement spindle amplifier with a different series or suffix was installed
- The spindle motor or serial sensor was replaced
- The feedback cable was disconnected and reconnected
- A connector was inserted into the wrong detector input
- Cable routing or cabinet wiring was changed
If the machine had been operating normally and no configuration work was performed, begin with the cable and connectors. Do not reinitialize spindle parameters simply because d2 is displayed.
3. Check the Serial Sensor Parameter Settings
For an alarm that appears during initial commissioning, after parameter initialization, or after a component replacement, verify the serial sensor parameters against the exact spindle motor and sensor specification.
Use the applicable FANUC spindle motor parameter manual and the machine builder’s original parameter backup. Confirm that:
- The selected sensor type matches the installed serial sensor
- The motor and detector combination is supported
- Sensor-related option and control settings match the installed hardware
- Restored parameters belong to the same CNC, spindle amplifier, motor, and sensor configuration
Do not copy parameters from a visually similar machine unless the complete hardware specification is identical. Before changing any value, save the current CNC and spindle parameter data.
If the machine ran normally with the same parameters before the alarm, treat an unexplained parameter change as unlikely unless memory, backup, software, or maintenance work occurred.
4. Verify Sensor and Spindle Amplifier Compatibility
FANUC lists an unsupported spindle amplifier as a possible startup cause of d2. A replacement amplifier can be electrically installable but still lack support for the installed serial detector or required control specification.
Confirm:
- Complete amplifier part number and suffix
- Amplifier hardware series
- Supported serial sensor type
- CNC and spindle software compatibility
- Connector arrangement and detector interface
- Machine-builder restrictions for the spindle configuration
Do not approve a replacement by output rating or physical appearance alone. If SP9132 began immediately after amplifier replacement, compatibility and configuration should be checked before assuming that the sensor has failed.
5. Inspect the Feedback Cable and Connectors
The serial sensor feedback cable is a primary SP9132 diagnostic target. Isolate machine power and follow the prescribed discharge time before touching amplifier connections.
Inspect the complete cable path between the serial sensor and spindle amplifier:
- Confirm that each connector is installed in the correct socket and fully locked.
- Look for bent, recessed, contaminated, corroded, or coolant-affected contacts.
- Check for crushed sections, cuts, excessive bending, or damage at moving cable-chain points.
- Inspect strain-relief areas near the sensor and amplifier connectors.
- Check continuity according to the applicable wiring diagram.
- Move or flex suspected cable sections only during an authorized diagnostic procedure.
If the alarm changes when the cable or connector is moved, replace the feedback cable rather than relying on a temporary reconnection.
Use the exact compatible cable. Pin assignments, shielding, connector keying, and supported cable length can differ between sensor and amplifier series.
6. Check Shielding and Electrical Noise When the Alarm Is Intermittent
Alarm d2 primarily identifies interrupted communication. Nevertheless, an intermittent signal can result from poor shielding, damaged shield termination, grounding problems, or routing beside high-current conductors.
Confirm that:
- The feedback cable shield is terminated as specified by FANUC and the machine builder.
- The sensor cable is separated from spindle motor power cables, contactor wiring, and other high-current conductors.
- Shield clamps and grounding surfaces are secure and free from contamination.
- No unapproved cable splice or extension has been installed.
Noise-corrupted serial data is more directly associated with SP9133/d3. Therefore, do not diagnose every d2 alarm as an interference problem. Give cable continuity and connector integrity priority when communication is completely lost.
7. Test the Serial Spindle Sensor
Some FANUC CNC alarm lists give sensor replacement as the direct action for SP9132. Other detailed amplifier manuals focus on parameters, amplifier support, the cable, and the spindle amplifier. The correct procedure therefore depends on the CNC, amplifier, sensor series, and manual edition.
After the parameters, compatibility, cable, and connectors have been checked, inspect the sensor installation and test with a known-compatible sensor when the applicable service procedure permits it.
Check for:
- Physical sensor damage
- Coolant or oil intrusion at the sensor connector
- Loose sensor mounting
- Damage caused by spindle-end runout or contact with a sensor ring
- A sensor specification that does not match the original machine configuration
Do not substitute a sensor only because its connector fits. Confirm the complete specification and required installation adjustment.
8. Replace the Spindle Amplifier Only After External Causes Are Eliminated
FANUC B-65285EN/04 identifies a defective spindle amplifier or spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board as a possible cause of alarm d2. Replace or repair the amplifier only after confirming:
- The sensor parameters are correct for the installed hardware
- The amplifier supports the serial sensor configuration
- The feedback cable and connectors are correct and serviceable
- A compatible sensor has been evaluated when required by the applicable manual
Before installing a replacement amplifier, verify the complete FANUC part number and every suffix. Preserve the original machine data and follow the machine builder’s commissioning procedure.
If a replacement is required, browse FANUC servo, spindle, and power drives or send the full model information to REACO CNC for compatibility checking.
9. Retest the Feedback System
After correcting the confirmed cause, power up the machine according to the applicable procedure and verify:
- SP9132 and amplifier alarm d2 no longer appear
- The serial sensor communicates normally at power-up
- The spindle can be enabled without another feedback alarm
- The spindle operates correctly through the machine builder’s test sequence
- Orientation and other position-dependent spindle functions operate correctly when fitted
If a different alarm appears, diagnose the new number separately. Do not continue treating SP9133, SP9134, SP9139, or SP9140 as the same fault.
Difference Between SP9132, SP9133, SP9134, and SP9137
These alarms are related, but they describe different fault conditions:
| CNC alarm | Amplifier display | FANUC description | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| SP9132 | d2 | Serial data error | Communication between the serial sensor and spindle amplifier is interrupted |
| SP9133 | d3 | Data transfer error | Received serial data was corrupted, commonly directing attention to shielding or noise |
| SP9134 | d4 | Soft phase alarm | A change in serial-sensor position data exceeded the expected range |
| SP9137 | d7 | Device communication error | Communication failed inside an electronic device on the amplifier control circuit |
SP9132 should not automatically be diagnosed using the shielding-only procedure for SP9133. Confirm the exact amplifier indication before troubleshooting.
FANUC SP9132 Diagnostic Table
| Finding | Likely interpretation | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm starts after parameter initialization | Sensor settings may not match the installed hardware | Restore or verify the correct sensor parameters |
| Alarm starts immediately after amplifier replacement | Amplifier compatibility or configuration may be incorrect | Verify the full model, suffix, supported sensor, and spindle settings |
| Previously working machine suddenly reports d2 | Cable, connector, or amplifier fault is more likely | Inspect and test the feedback cable before replacing hardware |
| Alarm changes when the cable moves | Intermittent conductor or connector contact | Replace the feedback cable |
| Alarm is intermittent near high-current switching | Shielding, grounding, or routing may be contributing | Correct cable separation and shield termination |
| Known-good cable does not clear the alarm | Sensor or amplifier remains suspect | Test the compatible sensor, then evaluate the amplifier |
| Amplifier shows d3 instead of d2 | Data is being received but is corrupted | Follow the SP9133 noise and shielding procedure |
Recommended Troubleshooting Order
- Confirm SP9132 on the CNC and d2/D2 on the spindle amplifier.
- Record the complete CNC, amplifier, motor, sensor, and cable specifications.
- Determine whether the alarm began during startup/commissioning or on a previously working machine.
- If configuration work occurred, verify the serial sensor parameters.
- Confirm that the spindle amplifier supports the installed serial sensor.
- Inspect, reseat, and test the sensor feedback cable and connectors.
- Correct damaged shielding, grounding, or cable routing when the fault is intermittent.
- Test or replace the exact compatible serial sensor when required by the applicable manual.
- Replace the spindle amplifier or control printed-circuit board only after external causes are eliminated.
- Retest the spindle and diagnose any new alarm by its actual number.
What Not to Do
- Do not initialize spindle parameters on a machine that previously operated normally without first saving a complete backup.
- Do not replace the spindle amplifier before checking the feedback cable and hardware compatibility.
- Do not bypass detector-disconnection monitoring to keep the spindle running.
- Do not install an unverified sensor or amplifier simply because the connector and power rating appear similar.
- Do not bundle the serial feedback cable with spindle motor power wiring.
- Do not treat d2 and d3 as identical alarms.
