FANUC SP9074 means that an internal CPU test in the spindle amplifier did not finish normally. The CNC displays SP9074, while the spindle amplifier displays alarm 74. FANUC identifies this as a hardware self-test alarm associated with Dual Check Safety and directs technicians to replace the applicable spindle-amplifier control printed-circuit board or the complete spindle amplifier.
This is not a spindle motor, sensor, feedback-cable, cutting-load, cooling-fan, or CNC program alarm. The applicable FANUC manual does not provide a parameter adjustment or external wiring repair for a confirmed SP9074.
| Alarm item | Identification |
|---|---|
| CNC alarm | SP9074 / CPU TEST ERROR |
| Spindle amplifier display | 74 |
| Detection condition | The spindle amplifier CPU test did not finish normally or returned an error |
| Applicable function | Dual Check Safety |
| Official repair direction | Replace the specified spindle-amplifier control PCB or complete spindle amplifier |
For the surrounding alarm numbers, see the FANUC Spindle Alarm Codes SP9034–SP9092.
What Does FANUC SP9074 Mean?
SP9074 is generated when the spindle amplifier detects an abnormal result in its internal CPU self-test. FANUC's αi Series maintenance manual describes the condition as a CPU test that failed to end normally. Dual Check Safety alarm lists describe it as an error detected during a spindle-amplifier CPU test.
The alarm identifies the processor test inside the spindle amplifier—not the CNC main CPU. This distinction matters because several nearby safety alarms can require replacement of a CNC CPU or main board, but FANUC does not specify that action for alarm 74.
The presence of SP9074 also does not mean that the operator entered an incorrect machining program or commanded too much spindle speed. It is an internal diagnostic failure in the safety-related spindle-amplifier hardware.
SP9074 Occurs Only With Dual Check Safety
FANUC states that alarm 74 can be issued only when Dual Check Safety is in use. Dual Check Safety uses independent monitoring paths and recurring self-diagnostic checks to detect faults that could prevent safety functions from operating correctly.
SP9074 specifically concerns the spindle amplifier's CPU test. It should not be interpreted as:
-
A safe-speed limit violation
-
A mismatch between the CNC and spindle speed judgments
-
A safety-parameter mismatch
-
A spindle ROM checksum error
-
Failure to execute a safety function
Those conditions have separate alarm numbers. Do not disable Dual Check Safety, bypass the alarm, or alter safety parameters in an attempt to make SP9074 disappear.
1. Confirm SP9074 and Amplifier Alarm 74
Before ordering or removing hardware, confirm both displays:
-
The CNC alarm screen shows SP9074 or CPU TEST ERROR.
-
The spindle amplifier status display shows 74.
-
The alarm is assigned to the expected spindle and amplifier.
-
The CNC is not displaying a different CPU, PMC, servo, or system alarm.
Record the alarm screen and equipment information before switching off the machine:
-
Complete CNC series and model
-
Exact spindle amplifier or SPM model, including every suffix
-
Spindle software series and edition, when available
-
Dual Check Safety configuration
-
Amplifier position and spindle number in a multi-spindle system
-
Whether an amplifier, control board, CNC board, or safety component was recently replaced
-
Any other alarm displayed at the same time
An alarm description containing the words “CPU” or “test” is not enough to identify SP9074. The exact CNC number and the amplifier display must agree.
2. Follow the Replacement Instruction for the Installed Amplifier Series
FANUC documentation gives slightly different replacement wording for different amplifier generations:
| Applicable documentation | FANUC repair direction |
|---|---|
| αi Series maintenance manual B-65285EN/04 | Replace the spindle amplifier or its control printed-circuit board |
| Series 30i-A and 0i-D Dual Check Safety alarm lists | Replace the SPM or spindle-amplifier control printed-circuit board |
| αi-B Series maintenance manual B-65515EN/01 | Replace the spindle amplifier |
These are not conflicting diagnoses. They reflect the service structure and approved replaceable units for the applicable hardware generation. Use the maintenance manual for the exact amplifier instead of assuming that every SPM supports the same board-level replacement.
If the installed series allows replacement of the control PCB, use the exact compatible board and follow the board-replacement procedure. If the applicable manual specifies unit replacement, replace the complete spindle amplifier.
3. Do Not Add Unrelated Troubleshooting Steps
FANUC's alarm 74 procedure does not instruct technicians to:
-
Change spindle motor parameters
-
Reload CNC programs or SRAM data
-
Modify the PMC ladder
-
Adjust safe-speed parameters
-
Inspect or replace the motor sensor
-
Replace the motor feedback cable
-
Check spindle motor phase order
-
Test magnetic contactors
-
Reduce machining load
-
Replace a cooling fan
-
Replace the CNC main board as the first action
Those checks belong to different alarms. Adding them to SP9074 troubleshooting can increase downtime and may introduce a second fault without addressing the failed CPU test.
A controlled power cycle may be used only when permitted by the machine builder's normal confirmation procedure. It does not constitute the repair specified by FANUC. If SP9074 and amplifier alarm 74 are confirmed, repeated resets should not be used as a substitute for replacing the abnormal hardware.
4. Select the Correct Replacement Hardware
Before installing a replacement control board or spindle amplifier, verify:
-
Complete FANUC part number and every suffix
-
Amplifier series and hardware specification
-
Rated capacity and supported spindle motor
-
CNC and spindle software compatibility
-
Dual Check Safety support
-
Connector arrangement and amplifier position
-
Machine-specific options and commissioning requirements
Do not select a replacement only by enclosure appearance, output capacity, or the base part number. Two amplifiers that look similar can differ in software support, hardware ID, safety capability, connector configuration, or machine compatibility.
If a control PCB is replaced separately, confirm that the board is approved for that amplifier model and that all internal connectors, jumpers, and mounting points are restored exactly as specified. If the applicable manual calls for complete amplifier replacement, do not improvise a board-level repair in the machine.
For replacement options, browse FANUC servo, spindle, and power drives or send the complete amplifier model and suffix to REACO CNC for a compatibility check.
5. Replace the Control PCB or Spindle Amplifier Safely
Replacement must be performed by qualified personnel with machine power isolated. Follow the discharge time, stored-energy warnings, electrostatic-discharge precautions, connector-handling instructions, and removal procedure in the applicable FANUC and machine builder manuals.
Before removal:
-
Back up the machine configuration using the approved procedure.
-
Record connector locations, amplifier position, labels, and switch or jumper settings.
-
Confirm that DC-link voltage has discharged to the specified safe level.
-
Protect the replacement board from electrostatic discharge.
-
Preserve the original wiring and safety configuration.
Do not move boards or internal connectors between amplifiers merely because the connectors appear to fit. An incompatible control board can generate another alarm or prevent the safety configuration from operating correctly.
6. Perform the Required Post-Replacement Safety Checks
Replacing a component in a Dual Check Safety system requires more than confirming that alarm 74 is gone. FANUC's Dual Check Safety documentation requires the user to verify applicable safety parameters and safety functions after replacing a part.
After installing the correct replacement:
-
Power up the machine according to the machine builder's procedure.
-
Confirm that SP9074 and amplifier alarm 74 no longer appear.
-
Verify that no new hardware-ID, axis-data, software-compatibility, or safety alarm is present.
-
Confirm the spindle amplifier is assigned to the correct spindle.
-
Verify the applicable safety parameters against the approved machine record.
-
Perform the required Dual Check Safety acceptance or functional tests.
-
Test spindle operation through the machine builder's commissioning procedure.
-
Record the replacement part number, software information, and test results.
Do not return the machine to production until the required safety validation is complete. Clearing the alarm alone does not prove that every safety function is operating correctly.
Difference Between SP9016, SP9074, SP9075, SP9076, and SP9079
Several FANUC alarms identify internal safety-related tests, but they are not interchangeable.
| CNC alarm | Amplifier display | FANUC description | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| SP9016 | 16 | Dual Check Safety RAM test error | The abnormal result was detected in a RAM test |
| SP9074 | 74 | CPU test error | The spindle amplifier CPU test did not finish normally |
| SP9075 | 75 | CRC error | The spindle amplifier ROM CRC test detected an error |
| SP9076 | 76 | Safety function not executed | A required spindle safety function was not executed |
| SP9079 | 79 | Initial test error | An abnormality was detected during spindle safety initialization or the control-program initial test |
For the related RAM-test condition, see the FANUC SP9016 Alarm 16: Dual Check Safety RAM Error.
Use the exact number displayed on the spindle amplifier. Do not diagnose every internal test alarm as a generic CPU fault.
FANUC SP9074 Diagnostic Table
| Finding | Interpretation | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| CNC shows SP9074 and amplifier shows 74 | The spindle amplifier CPU test detected an abnormal condition | Record the equipment data and replace the control PCB or amplifier specified by the applicable manual |
| CNC shows a CPU-related alarm but amplifier does not show 74 | A different CNC, PMC, servo, or spindle alarm may be present | Diagnose the exact alarm number rather than assuming SP9074 |
| Alarm returns with the original amplifier after a reset | The internal hardware fault remains | Do not rely on repeated resets; perform the specified replacement |
| Replacement control PCB clears the alarm on a series that supports board replacement | The original spindle-amplifier control board was abnormal | Complete the required DCS and spindle commissioning tests |
| Alarm remains after a compatible control PCB is correctly installed | The remaining amplifier hardware may be abnormal, or the replacement is not applicable | Recheck exact compatibility and follow the manual's complete-amplifier replacement procedure |
| Replacement amplifier reports a different alarm | The new display identifies a separate compatibility, configuration, or machine condition | Diagnose the new alarm independently |
| SP9075 appears instead of SP9074 | The detected test is ROM CRC rather than CPU execution | Follow the alarm 75 procedure |
What Not to Do
-
Do not disable or bypass Dual Check Safety.
-
Do not change safety parameters merely to clear SP9074.
-
Do not diagnose alarm 74 as a spindle motor or feedback-device fault.
-
Do not reload CNC programs or machine SRAM as the official remedy.
-
Do not replace the CNC main board solely because the alarm name contains “CPU.”
-
Do not repeatedly reset and continue operating a machine with a confirmed safety self-test alarm.
-
Do not install a control board or amplifier without checking the complete model, suffix, software, and DCS compatibility.
-
Do not return the machine to service without the required post-replacement safety validation.
Recommended Troubleshooting Order
-
Confirm SP9074 on the CNC and alarm 74 on the spindle amplifier.
-
Record the CNC, complete amplifier model and suffix, spindle software, DCS configuration, and any accompanying alarms.
-
Confirm that the alarm is the spindle amplifier CPU test error rather than a different CNC or PMC CPU alarm.
-
Consult the maintenance manual for the exact amplifier series to determine whether the approved replacement is the control PCB, the complete spindle amplifier, or either unit.
-
Verify the complete specification and compatibility of the replacement hardware.
-
Isolate machine power and replace the specified hardware according to the applicable safety procedure.
-
Restore and verify the approved machine configuration without making unrelated parameter changes.
-
Confirm that alarm 74 is cleared and no new alarm appears.
-
Complete the required Dual Check Safety acceptance checks and spindle commissioning tests.
-
If a different alarm appears, diagnose that number separately.
