FANUC SP9115(S) PS Control Axis Error 2 Alarm: Causes and Troubleshooting Guide

The FANUC SP9115(S) alarm indicates a PS control axis error 2. This alarm occurs when the PS management axis has not been set correctly, or when the spindle is used as the PS management axis but the related parameter setting is incorrect.

In many FANUC 30i-B series systems, the common power supply module, also called PS, is controlled by software. Because the PS cannot communicate directly with the CNC, the power supply information must be transferred to the CNC through a servo axis or spindle axis called the PS management axis.

If the PS management axis is not set, or if the amplifier group number is not correctly registered for the PS management axis, the CNC may generate the SP9115(S) PS CONTROL AXIS ERROR 2 alarm.

What Does FANUC SP9115(S) PS Control Axis Error 2 Mean?

SP9115(S): PS CONTROL AXIS ERROR 2 means that the CNC system has detected an error related to the PS management axis setting.

For FANUC systems using a common power supply module, the PS information is sent to the CNC through a selected servo or spindle amplifier. This selected axis is called the PS management axis.

If no PS management axis is set, or if the amplifier group number for the PS management axis is set incorrectly, the CNC may not be able to correctly obtain the power supply information. As a result, the SP9115(S) alarm may occur.

Common Causes of FANUC SP9115(S) Alarm

Common causes of FANUC SP9115(S) PS control axis error 2 include:

  • The PS management axis has not been set
  • The spindle is used as the PS management axis, but parameter No.4657 is set to 0
  • The amplifier group number for the PS management axis is not set correctly
  • The system is in initial commissioning and the PS management axis has not yet been automatically set
  • The common power supply module or amplifier has been replaced
  • The installed amplifier specification does not match the required configuration
  • The wrong parameter is used for the PS management axis setting

How the PS Management Axis Works

In FANUC 30i-B series systems, the common power supply module, or PS, uses software control. Therefore, power supply information can be obtained on the CNC side.

However, the PS cannot communicate directly with the CNC. It needs to transmit power supply information through a servo amplifier or spindle amplifier, which is called the PS management axis.

In amplifier connections using the CXA2A and CXA2B connectors, the PS management axis is usually the servo or spindle amplifier connected next to the PS module.

When the PS management axis is a servo axis, the amplifier group number should be set in parameter No.2557. When the PS management axis is a spindle axis, the amplifier group number should be set in parameter No.4657.

FANUC SP9115(S) Troubleshooting Steps

1. Confirm Whether the PS Management Axis Has Been Set

First, confirm whether the PS management axis has been correctly set in the CNC system.

If the PS management axis is not set, the CNC may not be able to receive the common power supply information correctly, which can trigger the SP9115(S) alarm.

2. Use Automatic PS Management Axis Setting During Initial Commissioning

If this alarm appears during initial machine commissioning, set parameter No.11549#0 = 1 in MDI mode.

After setting this bit, the system should automatically return the value to 0. Then power off and restart the CNC system.

After restarting, check whether a value has been automatically entered into parameter No.2557 or parameter No.4657. If the value is entered correctly, the automatic PS management axis setting has been completed.

3. Manually Set Parameter No.2557 or No.4657 If Auto Setting Fails

If the system cannot automatically set the PS management axis, manually set parameter No.2557 or parameter No.4657 according to the amplifier connected next to the common power supply module.

If the amplifier next to the power supply module is a servo amplifier, set the amplifier group number in parameter No.2557.

If the amplifier next to the power supply module is a spindle amplifier, set the amplifier group number in parameter No.4657.

For a BiSVSP integrated amplifier, parameter No.4657 may need to be set to 1, depending on the actual configuration.

4. Check Parameter No.4657 When the Spindle Is the PS Management Axis

If the spindle is used as the PS management axis, check parameter No.4657.

When the spindle is the PS management axis, parameter No.4657 should be set to an amplifier group number other than 0. If No.4657 is set to 0, the CNC may generate the SP9115(S) alarm.

5. Check Parameter No.2557 When the Servo Axis Is the PS Management Axis

If the servo amplifier next to the common power supply module is used as the PS management axis, check parameter No.2557.

For the PS management axis, parameter No.2557 should be set according to the correct amplifier group number.

6. Confirm the Amplifier Position Next to the Common Power Supply Module

Check whether the amplifier connected next to the PS module is a servo amplifier or spindle amplifier.

This is important because the parameter used for PS management axis setting depends on whether the PS management axis is SV or SP.

  • If the PS management axis is SV, check and set No.2557
  • If the PS management axis is SP, check and set No.4657

7. Check the Amplifier Specification After Replacement

If SP9115(S) occurs after replacing an amplifier or a common power supply module, confirm whether the replacement amplifier specification is correct.

A wrong or incompatible amplifier specification may cause the PS management axis setting to be incorrect or prevent the CNC from recognizing the power supply information correctly.

Recommended Solution

The recommended solution depends on whether the alarm occurs during initial commissioning or after hardware replacement.

  • If the alarm occurs during initial commissioning, try automatic PS management axis setting by setting No.11549#0 = 1 in MDI mode, then restart the CNC system.
  • After restart, check whether No.2557 or No.4657 is automatically set.
  • If automatic setting fails, manually set No.2557 or No.4657 according to whether the PS management axis is SV or SP.
  • If the spindle is the PS management axis, make sure No.4657 is set to an amplifier group number other than 0.
  • If the alarm occurs after replacing an amplifier or common power supply module, confirm the amplifier specifications and configuration.

When Should You Check the Amplifier Specification?

You should check the amplifier specification if the SP9115(S) alarm appears after replacing a servo amplifier, spindle amplifier, or common power supply module.

Before changing many parameters, confirm whether the installed amplifier is the correct specification for the machine configuration.

If the amplifier specification is incorrect, parameter setting alone may not solve the problem.
