FANUC SP9076 Alarm 76: Safety Function Not Executed

FANUC SP9076 means that the spindle amplifier did not execute a required Dual Check Safety function. The CNC displays SP9076, while the spindle amplifier displays alarm 76. This alarm can occur only on a system using FANUC Dual Check Safety.

FANUC identifies alarm 76 as an internal safety-function execution or program-monitoring fault. It is not, by itself, evidence of an incorrect safe-speed value, guard-door request, ladder signal, spindle command, motor cable, or feedback sensor. The official repair instruction depends on the amplifier series: the applicable manual may specify replacing the spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board or replacing the complete spindle amplifier.

What Does FANUC SP9076 Mean?

Dual Check Safety uses independent processing and diagnostic checks to monitor safety-related spindle operation. One of those diagnostics is program monitoring, which verifies that the required safety-related processing is being executed normally. SP9076 is generated when the spindle side detects that a safety function was not executed.

The wording may vary among FANUC manuals and alarm screens. Descriptions include:

  • Safety function not executed

  • Spindle safety function has not been executed

  • Any safety function was not executed

  • Inexecution of safety functions

These descriptions refer to the same alarm category. They do not identify which machine-level protective device or request initiated the condition. The detected problem is that required safety processing inside the spindle amplifier did not execute as expected.

Because the alarm is associated with internal safety monitoring, the official remedy is hardware replacement. FANUC does not list ordinary spindle parameter adjustment, PMC ladder modification, motor wiring checks, or feedback cable replacement as the alarm 76 procedure.

SP9076 Occurs Only With Dual Check Safety

FANUC states that alarm 76 can be issued only when Dual Check Safety is in use. Dual Check Safety provides independent monitoring paths in the CNC and drive system and performs periodic internal checks of safety-related processing.

When an internal safety diagnostic detects an abnormal condition, the system can inhibit operation and initiate the machine's configured safe-stop response. The exact machine response depends on the CNC series, drive configuration, machine builder design, and installed safety circuit.

SP9076 should therefore be treated as a safety-related hardware alarm. Do not bypass the alarm, disable the safety function, modify safety parameters merely to suppress the display, or return the machine to production without the required post-repair safety validation.

1. Confirm SP9076 and Amplifier Alarm 76

Before replacing hardware, confirm the exact displays:

  • The CNC alarm screen shows SP9076 or an equivalent SSPA:76 message.

  • The spindle amplifier status display shows 76.

  • The machine is configured to use FANUC Dual Check Safety.

  • The alarm is assigned to the spindle system, rather than a CNC, PMC, or servo alarm with a similar safety-related description.

Record the alarm screen before switching off the machine. Also record:

  • The complete CNC series and model

  • The full spindle amplifier or SPM part number, including every suffix

  • The amplifier series and hardware revision

  • The spindle software series and edition, when available

  • The Dual Check Safety configuration

  • Whether the alarm occurred at power-up, during operation, or after recent service

  • Any other alarm number displayed at the same time

This information is necessary because FANUC's replacement instruction is not identical across all amplifier families.

2. Follow the Replacement Instruction for the Installed Series

The official repair direction must be taken from the maintenance manual that applies to the exact amplifier.

FANUC documentation Alarm 76 repair direction
αi Series maintenance documentation Replace the spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board
Dual Check Safety alarm list for applicable systems Replace the spindle amplifier control printed-circuit board
αi-B Series maintenance documentation Replace the spindle amplifier

This distinction matters. Replacing only the control board is not the universal procedure for every FANUC spindle amplifier. Conversely, replacing the entire amplifier may be unnecessary when the applicable manual provides a board-level field replacement procedure and the work can be performed by appropriately qualified personnel.

Use the complete amplifier model and suffix to identify the correct manual. If the exact series cannot be confirmed, obtain a compatibility and repair assessment before ordering parts or dismantling the unit.

3. Do Not Add Unrelated Troubleshooting Steps

SP9076 does not, on its own, justify changing:

  • Safe-speed parameters

  • Motor initialization parameters

  • Spindle speed commands

  • Guard-door or safety-request ladder logic

  • PMC signals

  • Motor power wiring

  • Motor phase sequence

  • Spindle feedback wiring

  • Encoder or sensor alignment

  • Magnetic contactor circuits

Those items belong to other alarms or to machine-specific diagnostic procedures supported by additional evidence. Changing them during an alarm 76 investigation can introduce a second fault and can invalidate the machine's safety configuration.

A controlled power cycle may be used only if it is part of the machine builder's normal confirmation procedure. It does not repair the failed internal safety execution check. If SP9076 and amplifier alarm 76 are confirmed, follow the applicable hardware replacement procedure.

4. Select the Correct Replacement Hardware

Before installing a control printed-circuit board or complete spindle amplifier, verify:

  • The full FANUC part number and all suffixes

  • The amplifier family and hardware specification

  • The replacement board number, when board-level replacement is permitted

  • Compatibility with the CNC and spindle software

  • Dual Check Safety support

  • Compatibility with the spindle motor and machine configuration

  • Connector locations, keying, and mechanical arrangement

  • Any machine-builder-specific commissioning requirements

Do not select a replacement solely by output rating, enclosure size, photograph, or base part number. A unit that appears identical can have a different hardware specification, software compatibility range, or safety configuration.

If a replacement is required, browse FANUC servo, spindle, and power drives or send REACO CNC the complete part number for a compatibility check.

5. Replace the Specified PCB or Spindle Amplifier Safely

Replacement must be carried out by qualified personnel under the applicable FANUC and machine-builder procedures.

Before touching the amplifier:

  1. Stop the machine using the approved procedure.

  2. Isolate and lock out the machine power.

  3. Wait the specified DC-link discharge time.

  4. Verify the required circuits are de-energized.

  5. Observe electrostatic-discharge precautions when handling a control printed-circuit board.

  6. Record connector locations and preserve the original machine configuration.

Install only a verified compatible part. Reconnect every cable in its designated location, confirm connector locking, and inspect the installation before power is restored. Do not transfer boards, software devices, jumpers, or configuration parts between units unless the applicable procedure explicitly requires it.

6. Validate Dual Check Safety After Replacement

Clearing SP9076 is not the end of the repair. FANUC Dual Check Safety documentation requires safety-related parameters and safety functions to be checked after replacement of a component related to safety.

After installing the correct part:

  • Confirm that SP9076 and amplifier alarm 76 no longer appear.

  • Confirm that no new hardware, software, configuration, or safety alarm is displayed.

  • Verify the applicable safety parameters against the authorized machine record.

  • Perform the prescribed Dual Check Safety function check or acceptance test.

  • Confirm the machine's safe-stop behavior and monitored spindle functions according to the machine builder's procedure.

  • Test normal spindle operation only after the safety validation has passed.

  • Record the replacement and test results in the machine's maintenance documentation.

The safety-function test should be performed by an authorized person familiar with the specific CNC, machine, and risk assessment. Do not release the machine for production merely because alarm 76 disappeared after replacement.

SP9076 Compared With Related Dual Check Safety Alarms

Several spindle alarms in this range are generated by internal Dual Check Safety diagnostics. The exact number identifies the failed check.

CNC alarm Amplifier display FANUC diagnostic Main distinction
SP9016 16 RAM test Safety-related RAM test data could not be verified
SP9072 72 Speed-check comparison CNC and spindle-amplifier motor-speed check results did not agree
SP9074 74 CPU test The spindle CPU test did not finish normally
SP9075 75 ROM CRC test The spindle software ROM CRC check detected an error
SP9076 76 Safety program monitoring A required spindle safety function was not executed
SP9077 77 Axis-number judgment CNC and spindle-amplifier axis-number judgments did not agree
SP9078 78 Safety-parameter comparison CNC and spindle-amplifier safety-parameter check results did not agree
SP9079 79 Initial safety test Required safety functions were not executed during the initial power-up test

SP9076 is especially easy to confuse with SP9079. Alarm 76 concerns safety-function execution detected by program monitoring. Alarm 79 concerns the initial safety test performed at power-up. Always diagnose the number actually displayed.

For the related RAM-test alarm, see the FANUC SP9016 Alarm 16 guide.

FANUC SP9076 Diagnostic Table

Finding Interpretation Recommended action
CNC shows SP9076 and amplifier shows 76 The spindle safety program monitor detected that a required safety function was not executed Record the equipment data and follow the applicable FANUC replacement procedure
Applicable αi manual specifies control PCB replacement Board-level replacement is the documented repair for that series Replace the correct control printed-circuit board and complete the required safety checks
Applicable αi-B manual specifies amplifier replacement Complete-unit replacement is the documented repair for that series Replace the compatible spindle amplifier and complete the required safety checks
Alarm disappears after a reset but returns The internal fault has not been reliably corrected Do not treat repeated resets as a repair; follow the hardware procedure
Another alarm appears after replacement A separate compatibility, installation, configuration, or hardware condition is present Diagnose the new alarm number independently
SP9079 appears instead of SP9076 The initial safety test did not execute correctly Follow the alarm 79 procedure rather than the alarm 76 procedure
Replacement clears the alarm but safety tests have not been completed Repair validation is incomplete Keep the machine out of production until the prescribed safety-function checks pass

What Not to Do With SP9076

  • Do not bypass Dual Check Safety or defeat a safety circuit.

  • Do not alter safety parameters simply to clear the alarm.

  • Do not assume a guard-door switch or safe-speed setting caused alarm 76.

  • Do not reload CNC programs or restore SRAM as a substitute for the hardware repair.

  • Do not replace motor, encoder, feedback cable, or power wiring without evidence of another fault.

  • Do not install a visually similar amplifier without confirming the full specification.

  • Do not return the machine to service before the required safety-function test is completed.

Recommended Troubleshooting Order

  1. Confirm SP9076 on the CNC and alarm 76 on the spindle amplifier.

  2. Verify that the machine uses Dual Check Safety.

  3. Record the CNC model, complete amplifier part number and suffix, software information, alarm timing, and any accompanying alarms.

  4. Identify the maintenance manual for the exact spindle amplifier series.

  5. Determine whether that manual specifies replacement of the control printed-circuit board or the complete amplifier.

  6. Verify the exact replacement part and its CNC, software, motor, and Dual Check Safety compatibility.

  7. Isolate machine power and replace the specified hardware according to the applicable procedure.

  8. Restore power and confirm that alarm 76 is cleared without a new alarm.

  9. Verify the safety parameters and perform the prescribed Dual Check Safety function check.

  10. Document the results and return the machine to service only after all required tests pass.
